Safety Induction & Competency Unit (SICU)

Gain access to our Lab by completing training in safe tool & machine operation

What is SICU?

To access the DMaF Lab, students and staff must complete the Safety Induction and Competency Unit (SICU). The SICU introduces users to practical fabrication techniques, gaining the knowledge and skills required for safe work practice on a broad range of tools and machines.

What is involved.

There are three components to the SICU course: a 3 hour Timber Lab session, a 3 hour Metal Lab session, and an online multiple choice quiz.

Through the supervised operation of machinery and tools, you will gain a sound understanding of Work, Health & Safety (WHS) procedures and basic fabrication skills

How to sign up.

To take the SICU you must enrol in DESA1555 – Safety Induction and Competency Unit through the Sydney Student Portal. If the unit does not appear in your subject list, please self-enrol in the unit for the applicable semester.

DESA1555 will appear on your Canvas dashboard, allowing you to sign up for Timber and Metal session dates. Please note that we only run SICU in the early weeks of the semester; spaces are limited so get in early to ensure access to DMaF.

Completion.

When all three components of your SICU are complete, please see DMaF Lab staff to receive your DMaF Lab Competency Card, which must be worn at all times when accessing the fabrication labs.

The SICU introduces you to our Level 1 tools and machines. Once this is complete you may gain further competencies across Level 2 and 3 equipment through induction sessions. See our technical staff or check back here as session dates will be announced throughout the semester.
